Where they work

Security where the power and internet don't reach

  • Solar 4G camera on a pole on an Australian farm Farms & rural properties Gates, cattle yards, pumps and machinery, kilometres from the house.
  • 4G camera on a timber post at a building site Building sites Watch materials and plant before the power is connected.
  • Solar power system and cameras on a pole beside a shed Sheds, tanks & depots Cover sheds and yards with no cable run back to the house.

Planning your site

  1. Sun Face the panel north, tilted 30–45° (steeper in the southern states for winter sun). Keep it clear of trees and roof shadow from 9am to 3pm.
  2. Battery A bigger battery covers more cloudy days. Choose the 31.2Ah VIGI or a Dahua kit for southern winters, shaded sites or full-time recording.
  3. 4G signal Check coverage with your phone at the mounting spot. Recording stays on the memory card, so data is only used when you watch.
  4. Mounting Mount at least 3m up a pole or wall, out of easy reach, with the panel above the camera and the cable tied neatly down the pole.

Solar camera questions

Do solar cameras keep working in winter and on cloudy days?

Yes. The battery stores enough to run the camera overnight and through runs of cloudy weather, and the panel still charges in overcast light. For southern states, shaded sites or 24/7 recording through winter, choose a bigger battery such as the 31.2Ah VIGI kit or a Dahua kit.

Do I need Wi-Fi, NBN or a power point?

No. The solar panel and lithium battery power the camera, and the built-in 4G modem sends the video over the mobile network. All you add is a data SIM.

Which SIM card should I use?

Any Australian 4G data SIM on the Telstra, Optus or Vodafone network. Check coverage with your phone where the camera will go; in rural areas Telstra usually reaches furthest.

How much mobile data will it use?

Footage records to the memory card in the camera, so data is only used when you watch live, play back remotely or receive alerts. Most sites run well on a mid-size data plan; daily live viewing needs more.

Is there a monthly fee?

No subscription for the camera or app. The only ongoing cost is your SIM data plan.

Where is the footage stored?

On a microSD card in the camera. The VIP Vision VSIPSLR-3P3F includes a 128GB card; for the other kits add a high-endurance surveillance microSD card, which we stock.

What is the difference between 24/7 and low-power solar cameras?

The TP-Link VIGI and Dahua kits use a large panel and battery to run a full 4G camera around the clock. The VIP Vision all-in-ones sleep in a low-power mode, keep a slow always-on picture, and wake to full video when they detect a person or vehicle. They are smaller and quicker to fit.

Can one solar power system run more than one device?

The TP-Link VIGI solar power systems have three 12V DC outputs, so they can run a camera plus a 4G router or another low-power device. Call us and we will check the power budget for your site.

Do I need an electrician to install it?

No mains wiring is involved. Most customers fit the kit to a pole or wall themselves with the supplied brackets, insert the SIM and set it up in the app.

How do I stop someone stealing it?

Mount the kit at least 3m up a pole or wall, out of easy reach. The cameras send person and vehicle alerts to your phone, and several kits have a built-in siren and light to warn people off.

Solar basics

How does a solar 4G camera work?

A solar panel charges a lithium battery during the day. The battery runs the camera day and night, and a 4G modem in the camera sends the video over the mobile network to your phone. Nothing connects back to the house.

  1. Solar panelCharges by day
  2. Lithium batteryRuns it day and night
  3. 4G camera & appVideo to your phone

What you need

  • A sunny spot: panel facing north, clear of shade for most of the day.
  • 4G coverage: check with your phone where the camera will go.
  • A data SIM: any Australian 4G data SIM on Telstra, Optus or Vodafone.
  • A memory card: footage records in the camera, so data is only used when you watch.

24/7 or low-power?

TP-Link VIGI and Dahua kits use a big panel and battery to stream full video around the clock. VIP Vision all-in-ones save power by keeping a slow picture until they see a person or vehicle, then wake to full video.
